Hey Guys,
the designs are shaping up nicely. Just a quick reminder, we need a powerful presence and it needs to really say high-end. Think Saks or Neimans vs Banana Republic or Gap. Also, western union can be considered as an option once we get to that point. We will choose a winner and refine the wining design to our tastes from there.
Thanks everyone for good work!

Would help us all a lot if you came in and rated designs and/or eliminated designs. Also, if you like a design enough to give it 2 or more stars and left a little note about what could be changed to make it better.
You'll find that you end up with more to choose from.

I agree. This contest has promise, but without feedback (and/or "star ratings") this contest will not be as successful as it could be. By not adding comments (or using the star ratings) the site will be ranked (as seen above) as "unhealthy" and this will scare off other designers that would (might) make this contest even more interesting. (ok...that's my soap box for today) (-:

@Think in Ink - If you are talking about the contests watched list there's a checkbox before each one with a 'remove selected' button below the list. I dont think there is one for contests entered (not that i can find anyway!)< Maybe this would be a good idea for the future

ADE, hopefully when you get some time, you can at least rate these entries that way all of us designers know what type of look your going for. From there we can make changes or actually want to start over from scratch if necessary. I know you stated you want the 'High-End' look, but thats still a bit vague.

Hi everyone. Thank you again for all of your hard work. We have seen some good and not too good designs here. I personally think the submissions that have been most successful are the ones with a real thought process behind them, and some of you have been good at sharing that thought process. This gives us a better idea of how to steer you in a clear direction rather than just eliminate the entry.

Also, please remember that the most successful designs are the simplest, and usually the ones where you ask yourself, "now why didn't I think of that?" Take a look at Pentgram's redesign of the Saks logo. Also, examine how Landor treated the re-branding of the United Negro College fund. These are both good examples of simple, clean design, but well-thought-out and well-executed.

Hi everyone,
We like a good 3 or 4 designs in here, and they really work and are being improved by the designers. For those who want to keep submitting, I think it is good to keep in mind a few things:
- Please don't design with only digital in mind. The logo will be also printed out, embossed in stationery perhaps, on signage, in 3-D environments, and on promotional products.
- Please make sure there is a concept and explain what your thought process was in designing this. If we just get a design with nothing to back it up and we don't like it, there is no way to give proper feedback and it will just be eliminated.
- PLEASE make sure it doesn't look like Illustrator or Photoshop threw up all over it.
- You guys rock and we are trying to be as constructive with criticism as possible. Don't be offended. These are not attacks on you, but feedback on the design.
Thanks so much for the work so far!

@ Rambo4u
Hmm interesting comment...about being a waste of time...well I hope you have taken something positive....your idea was not bad...keep it simple exactly what the CH is looking for. the only thing is you spelled the company name incorrectly i's Alex Davis Estates not Alex Davies Estates.
Try and be positve look at all the examples and learn from those..not just the one that win...you'll go a lot further and look more professional at the same time. don't be affraid to ask questions of other deisgners or go to the 99 forum and see what there..I am sure there are a few deisgners on here that will be more than will to share some professional advice.
Like I said you'll come off as a poslihed professional..good luck and all the best in your design career

Design99 noted (at the top of this page & after each contest)..."the contest holder has 7 days to pick a winner or withdraw the contest" --- The Contest Holder ended the contest 5 days ago and seems to be MIA. Does anybody know what the rules are if the contest holder does not choose in the 7 day period? Does that simply mean the contest is DOA and/or Abandoned?
...this seems to be happening A LOT with Design99 contests lately. :(

That is true, but if they are just using Design99 to 'fish' for ideas...it is easier to walk away from the small entry fee than to pay the contest award. Look at it this way... You need a logo, but don't want to pay the 'big bucks' to have a design firm make it. So..you sign up on this site with a large contest award. Then you set up the contest and pay the small 'contest startup fee'. Now you really have not put that much money in (yet), but the promise of a huge award gets a lot of designer interested and they spend a large proportion of their time on your contest. Now for that small fee and the 'promise' of a large contest reward...you have some pretty good ideas to work with. So...your next step is to drop out/cancel the contest and try some of the ideas on your own. --- The stakes are VERY high for the designer, but do not seem to be for the contest holder. That is why people are voting (in the Design99 blog) that the contest holder be made to put down not only the fee but the 'reward' first...before the contest starts. This prevents the holder from 'bolting' and abandoning the contest. For a small fee (to set up the contest) a LOT of contest holders seem to be jumping ship with some pretty good design ideas. Copy right? Yup, all they need to do is jump ship, change your design just a bit and your copy right is null and void.
This site is a GREAT idea, but they really need to work some of these issues out first. As I am sure they will. But....in the meantime I am seeing a LOT of people in several contests saying "The contest has been over for a while, who won?" Often an answer that goes 'un-answered'. )-:
(my soap box for the day)
PS | If I am wrong....I would LOVE to be proven so (and will listen to counter points), but......this is my 'gut' feeling on a lot of these contests. And it really does not have to be that way. (-;

...Maybe give the contest holders the option of paying 'part' of the 'award' upfront as "contest insurance" with a special note in the brief that this contest has been insured by Design99 staff. That way...if the contest holder 'bolts' - the "insurance" kicks in and the designer will at least get half of what the contest holder promised as a 'reward'. --- Or better yet, give the contest holder the 'option' of putting 'all' the reward "up front" and then give their brief a big 'gold star' telling the designers that even if the holder abandons the contest someone will be winning 100% of the prize. While this is great for the designers, it is risky for the Design99 people and the contest holders. So...they then might have to add a clause like: "If the contest holder puts all the prize money 'up front', but is not happy with the contest...they can extend the contest for another week without having to pay the fee of starting up a new contest.
I am not sure what, but I believe they would be able to work out some type of compromise.
And this is not implying this is an 'abandoned' contest, but the longer it takes to declare a winner (here) the more likely it just is not going to happen. I think that is something that the people at Design99 need to address as it seems a lot of people has the same question(s).

One thing for the CH's to consider in non-private contests like this one. A google search on their company name will turn up this contest as a result. (e.g., A search on "Alex Davis Estates" currently ranks this contest page in the top 40 results.) I'm sure it wouldn't be in the best interest of a CH to risk negative exposure for an abandoned contest.

Tip: That is why Design99 offers the 'private' option so that the contest is not ranked by Google, but stays 'off' Google's radar. That is also an excellent reason to be careful what you write on this site and to be careful not to 'bicker' with other designers. (-:

Ya I the idea of jacking the price to start the contest if the reward is so high...I mean that sounds like problem solved to me.

I would say that #231 and a few others have the same character treatment. A company to respect there! :(

Yup...that is what I was worried about. This is something that 99Design really needs to look into or else people will stop trusting this website real fast. I agree, the new logo looks A LOT like #231. If I were Jaan Hubb (the designer of #231)...I would write to the 99Desgin complaint department asap!

Some states mandate that the design needs to change by up to 20% from the origional design (this varies by state). If they jumped ship with "your" idea, but did not change the design enough....you might have a case in small claims court!

If 99Designs does not respond, I think you are well within your rights to contact ADE directly. It's possible that a third party held the contest on behalf of ADE (and took credit for your design), so I would suggest you be diplomatic about it, since they may not even be aware that their new logo was essentially stolen from you. Good luck, and let us know how it works out.

I agree. ZROX has made an excellent point! However if that does not pan out I would first make a snapshop (a screen capture) of the logo they are using (on their website) along with your logo as 'side by side' evidence. Then I would do some online investigation. One valuable resource is AIGA's PDF on Copyright laws [ http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/copyright-and-licensing ]. Or the the US Gov's Copyright website [ http://www.copyright.gov ]. Also....when I was in school our instructor had been a freelance illustrator/designer for many year and had to deal with this several times in his career. His advise was (1) do your research and document the problem then (2) find out all you can about your states copyright laws and how to use the small claims courts in your area. These bits of info may not help you in this case, but having it on hand might help the next time someone tries to take advantage of you in the future. Good luck!
Please keep us informed. If 99Design does not 'step up' then I think we "all" should write to the owners of this website!

Ya Jaanhubb it does look a lot like yours. It's also funny how you got the only rating on the entire page it's posted on, and 4 stars. He obviously had shown interest in it. Gl getting feedback from 99 designs though. I would get a lawyer and take him to small claims court. Maybe try to get in contact with Judge Judy or Judge Joe Brown so we all can see this unfold, haha.
